I went back to the gym last night after a lengthy absence. While it didn’t me long to get used to the routine — lifting weights is a lot like riding a bike — I did notice that my focus wasn’t there. Despite having a good workout, I wasn’t in the zone as the saying goes. I’m not worried, it only takes a week to hit that level of focus that transports me inward, where the outside would doesn’t exist. I have experienced this same feeling in my writing.
Since starting this blog and returning to the desk to finish Racing the Rain, I see similarities with how I am in the gym. In the beginning, while I was churning out words, the focus wasn’t there. I didn’t hit my writing stride. The zone seemed far off. But like in the gym, I know I have to push through it to see the improvements.
