Over my vacation, I watched the entire Hellraiser series (nine movies in all). As a writer I learned a valuable lesson in knowing when to call it quits. Don’t get me wrong, I love Clive Barker’s original movie and the novella that preceded the film. Barker’s Hellraiser was one of the reasons I became a writer. However, after seeing how the series went from being riveting to unwatchable, I learned a valuable lesson of knowing when to call it quits.
I don’t blame Barker. He signed away the character and story rights to the producer before the first film in the series. (On second thought, maybe I do blame him.)
The movie marathon this past weekend has me rethinking my Ascension series. No matter the reception, the series is broken over four books, including the prequel, Numb. After that, who knows. But I do know that, unlike Pinhead and his fellow Cenobites, this series will rest in peace when the time comes.
