With NaNoWriMo coming, I need to make as much time for writing as I can. This isn’t much of a problem at home as my kids are either adults or old enough to be self sustaining for a month, but work is another issue. What can I say I’m popular. Not really, it’s more that I’m the go to monkey for everything from office supplies to printer mishaps. During the normal work day, it’s not a problem, but when it’s before working hours, when I’m on a break or during lunch, it’s a tad inconvenient.
While I don’t think there’s malice behind my coworker’s constant interruptions during lunch, I do believe that sometimes they fail to realize that I get downtime too. I work around people who, more often than not, expect you to drop everything to take care of their issue. On ocassion, it’s justified. Most times, it’s not. And while I don’t always mind the interruptions, it’s downright annoying during the month of November. What aggravates matters is that I arrive early to work to nab a good parking space. It also affords me the time to write before work starts. You would think I would be interruption free, but then again, you would be wrong. I’ve deduced that as long as I am visible on the floor, someone is going to find a reason to need me.
So I disappeared.
I still get to work early, but I don’t go to the office. I found a cozy spot in our caffeteria complete with wifi and an AC outlet. I’m accross the hall from our coffee shop, which means I can grab a snack or coffee an (get this) do some writing! It’s only been the first day, but so far, it’s working as planned. Add my iPod and headphones and to most people, and I have a built in do not disturb sign. Hopefully this equals more writing time.
I’m not saying this is going to be perfect. I’m sure there will be occassional interruptions, but after being able to finish this post without being interupted — something that I wouldn’t be able to do in my offie — this setup is already working better than intended.
I have a little over two weeks before the beast that is NaNoWriMo rears its mighty head. I will be ready.
